It’s funny, when people call you ‘shy’, they usually smile. As if it were something cute, some little quirk you’ll grow out of, like the gaps when your baby teeth fall out. If they knew what it is to be truly shy – and not just a bit insecure when you are introduced to someone – they would not smile. Not if they knew how that knot in your stomach feels, or how it makes your palms sweat, or steals your ability to say anything that makes sense. There is nothing cute about it.
